Voodoo Doll

it sounds like a joke but that’s their original purpose

the hatian ‘voodoo doll’ was based off of african healing dolls made of wood. you would do nice things to the doll, place it in nice places, or add brightly colored pegs. you made dolls of you and your friends so you could try and make their lives comfortable

the one we think of was corrupted by the brittish, who had ‘poppets’, which were fabric stuffed dolls you stabbed.

Didn’t know that!

when i was in middle school, i got bullied for being a black fall out boy fan.

literally almost every day of my life these idiots would trash my interests and my personality because of my race.

all because “emo music is white culture”.

if you’re a person of color who’s bullied for their “white” interests, i raise my glass to you and wish you have an amazing day. it will get better, you rule.

if you’re white, you can and are encouraged to reblog this. thank you for being kind and wonderful to kids of color.

Also friendly reminder that Pete Wentz, the Fall Out Boy frontman, is half black. Referring to music/art created by POC as “white culture” is racist gatekeeping edgelord nonsense.

If we’re going to normalize fidget toys(which I’m all for) then we should also normalize it when disabled people flap their hands, rock back and forth, or other behaviours that are viewed as “weird” but are actually self stimulation. Or at the least could you not stare or mock us. Because for some it’s just a case of fiddling around with a toy, but for us it helps us to function.

school districts and administrators are working hard to scare students out of protesting in the wake of the Parkland shooting.

don’t fall for their bullshit. you have the right to speak up and make yourself heard. a local superintendent doesn’t overrule the first amendment, much as they might like to.

and here’s an open invitation: I’m a teacher, recent PhD, one-time educational administrator (although not in a public school), and hopefully soon to be a college professor. if you need advice on navigating the crap your school is giving you or minimizing the impact they can have on your chances of getting into the college of your dreams, message me. I’ll help you find legal resources, write admissions essays, find ways to argue for your right to protest to your school board – whatever I can do.

please signal boost this, and if you’re someone who can help (civil rights lawyer? college admissions counsellor? experienced activist leader?), join in and let young activists know what you can do to help.

Hi there is no such thing as a “permanent record” outside of the legal system. Your school records don’t go to the FBI or the cops.

Also if you get suspended or punished for protesting, call the ACLU. There’s case law protecting the first amendment rights of students. They can help.

Not to mention,

“I see you got suspended. Why?”

“I got suspended for organizing/participating in a direct action initiative to address gun violence in American schools in the wake of the Florida Shooting.”

That shows an engagement with current events and an active participation in civil government. Trust me, colleges eat that shit up with a spoon.

The other day I was washing my hands and another woman came out the stall a couple seconds after I did. She wasn’t cis, and a different woman waiting for someone to finish up looked angry and opened her mouth to say something. Before she could, I smiled real friendly a this woman who’s just trynna wash her hands and told her I loved her skirt, and we started talking clothes.

The waiting woman was still clearly pissed but she didn’t say anything because she knew I wouldn’t have her back. That’s all it took to keep some poor lady just trynna scrub up from getting harassed.

Sometimes doing the right thing is really hard and kinda scary. Other times all it takes is making it clear that you won’t support someone’s nastiness. It’s a little enough thing to do your part.

Cis women: read this.

Great tip, thank you. I like to think that I’d have no problem standing up and telling someone to go fuck themselves in the event they did actually say something nasty, but preventing that situation is clearly 100 million times better than defending a harassed person after the fact.

Tumblr, you’re killing art.

This is a horrible website for art. This is a horrible website for artists.

The only art that ever gets attention here is fanart, or artists who already have thousands of followers.

Nothing new is ever added to the mix, nothing else ever gets out there, because you guys see art, and while you might think it’s cool, you keep on scrolling because it isn’t Undertale or Homestuck or whatever sports anime is popular right now. You only give attention to fanart, and even that is an elitist club where attention is only given to the chosen few fandoms.

Artists who create original work are getting less and less support all the time. I’m feeling it, and I’m seeing my friends get less support too. We’re losing followers. Our note count is going down.

“Do art for yourself!” People say. But that only goes so far. No matter how you slice it, getting ignored and snubbed constantly on pieces you spent precious hours on while you watch the notes on a quick fanart doodle soar into the thousands hurts. We don’t create art to place it in a dark room and never be looked at. No artist ever posts art here thinking “I hope no one looks at this and it gets no notes.”

Encouragement and praise go a long way to help artists with original ideas, but you guys don’t care about original ideas. They’re falling by the wayside. Soon there won’t be any new things to make fanart of. How many movies that have come out in recent years have been sequels or remakes? A lot more than new, original concepts, that’s for sure. When you look around in a few years and find that everything is stale, boring, and overdone, know that you have no one to blame for that but yourself.

Ideas need support. Ideas need to be shared and fostered and encouraged. Otherwise, they die off into nothing.

Reblog more than just fanart, please.

You know, it’s not even just artist that have thousands of followers.

I have 5k+ followers as of a couple months ago. My original works hardly get any notice, and a lot of the time my fanart doesn’t get noticed. People are ridiculous when it comes to reblogging people’s art. They’re ashamed of it for some reason. Like, I’ll have art that has 100 notes. two of them are reblogs, and they were MY OWN REBLOGS. TO MY OTHER TWO ART BLOGS.

People need to fucking reblog art. REBLOG THE ART PLEASE. SUPPORT ARTIST’S ORIGINAL CONTENT! PLEASE!
